Church Slavonic

Old Church Slavonic was developed in the late 9th century by two Christian missionaries, St. Cyril and St. Methodius. Planning to spread Christianity in Moravia (in the present-day Czech Republic), the brothers sought to forge a standardized form of their homeland's Slavic dialects for the religion. In doing so, they created the Glagolitic alphabet (a precursor to Cyrillic) in which the earliest documented Slavic writings exist. Today, Church Slavonic, which emerged from the older variety, remains the liturgical language of Slavic Orthodox churches throughout the city, including not only Russian churches, but Rusyn, Ukrainian, Serbian, and others.

ithin a few blocks of each other on the Upper East Side, two historic Russian Orthodox Churches serve a community which includes descendants of White Russian exiles from the 1917 Russian Revolution. Both use the liturgical language of Church Slavonic, but the one on 93rd represents (and is the center of) the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (ROCOR) while the other, on 97th, is part of the Russia-centered church.
